Cart Recovery10 June 2026 · 5 min read

Abandoned carts are not lost sales. Recover them on WhatsApp.

Seven out of ten carts never make it to checkout. Email recovery barely moves the needle in India. WhatsApp recovery regularly brings back 15 to 25 percent of that revenue.

Open your store analytics and look at the carts created versus orders placed. The gap is usually enormous. Industry wide, around 70 percent of carts are abandoned, and on mobile the number climbs higher. For a brand doing 10 lakh a month in sales, there could be 20 lakh or more sitting in abandoned carts.

Most Indian D2C brands either ignore this completely or send a recovery email that lands in the Promotions tab and dies there. Email open rates for recovery campaigns hover around 8 to 15 percent in India. Click rates are worse.

Why carts get abandoned in the first place

  • Shipping cost or delivery time appeared too late in checkout
  • The customer got distracted: a call, a notification, a chai break
  • Payment friction, especially failed UPI attempts
  • They were comparison shopping and planned to come back, then forgot

Distraction and forgetfulness dominate that list. These are not lost customers. They are interested customers who need exactly one nudge, delivered where they will actually see it.

The recovery sequence that works

Message 1: the gentle reminder (30 to 60 minutes)

A friendly note with the cart contents and a one-tap link back to checkout. No discount yet. A meaningful share of customers complete the purchase from this message alone, at full price.

Message 2: handle the objection (12 to 24 hours)

Reinforce trust: easy returns, delivery timelines, cash on delivery availability. This is the right moment for social proof, like your rating or a quick customer quote.

Message 3: the incentive (48 hours, optional)

If margin allows, a small time-bound discount or free shipping closes the stragglers. Keep it scarce and honest. Customers learn fast if every abandoned cart magically produces a coupon.

The biggest mistake in cart recovery is sending one message and giving up. The second biggest is discounting in the first message and training customers to abandon on purpose.
